Overview
Built for the MATE ROV World Championship 2025.
Scorpion is an underwater ROV that recognises objects in its camera feed while it works. Its YOLOv8 detection model reached 0.96 mAP at 0.5 IoU, and the work is written up in the HyDRA Scorpion paper submitted to IEEE Access. At the MATE ROV World Championship 2025 at Alpena, Michigan, USA, the team became world champion in technical documentation and placed fifth in project demonstration.
Scorpion was designed and manufactured by the team as a platform for underwater perception.
Its detector, a YOLOv8 model trained on underwater imagery, reached a precision of 0.958 and a recall of 0.913, with 0.96 mAP at 0.5 IoU.
